Content Targeting

Gary G

Recommended Posts

We have a content targeting technology and would like to know what is the best way to integrate into Revive Adserver.

It takes published content (free texts, product names, barcodes like UPC, EAN and ISBN), returns IAB categories, product categories, keywords, etc. Individual banners can be targeted with specific categories or keywords.

We have implemented it in our ad server as a new type of delivery options. We would like to know if the open source ad server would like to have it as well.

Please let me know if you would like to know more or click http://www.adrelevantis.com.

Hi Arun,

Thanks for the message.

We are interested in next generation of content targeting more than just keywords targeting. More specifically, our technology categorizes content into IAB category and product category in realtime. Banner ads can target to these categories. A banner is delivered when its category matches the content category.

We are also interested in platform independent targeting, which means we want the technology works not only in Web but also in native apps.

Here are a few questions I have.

Do you have a mod that works with content category? Are you interested in content targeting by category?

Do you mods work for both Web and in-app and how?

Thanks once again.

We have Content Optimization module which compares the title, Meta description, tags and other content of the website. So that advertiser can serve the ads in publisher sites based on IAB format Content targeting .

For Native apps we need to check feasibility of fetching content from Apps . If you have any known api to fetch content/category of native apps kindly share .

I think there are some confusion between IAB Ad Formats and IAB Category (http://www.iab.com/guidelines/iab-quality-assurance-guidelines-qag-taxonomy/). IAB Cateogry is not widely adopted yet. We want to start to use and take advantage of IAB Category.

Matching ads with category is superior to matching ads with keyword. For example, you can target your Canon EOS 70D camera to Photography/Digital_Camera category. While people search Nikon or Olympus cameras, your ad can be displayed because they are in the same category. For another example, you can target Katy Perry concert ticket ad to Art and Entertainment/Music. The ad will be shown while people read Taylor Swift news.

To make it work, your module needs to have at least the following capabilities: 1. identify content category; 2. allow ads to be targeted to category; 3. match content with ad by category.

Currently, our ad server has the capabilities (http://www.adrelevantis.com/corp/agent/adrelevantis.pdf).

Here is the favors I would like to ask:

We would like to know if there is interest in Category matching from the Open Source Community. If yes, we would like to share more about what we do and how to integrate it into Open Source.

Yes we got your points regarding IAB category matching .  We gone through your requirement and it can do it customization work it will take 3 days for web browsers only.

To identify website category , we can go with Similar web API (https://developer.similarweb.com/ ) Website Categorization feature,   Similar web API available for free , only to limited amount of sites . we need to purchase to get full support . Similar web API returns the category of publisher site. So that we can perform the category targeting in web browsers as you expected.

 Clarification:

    1.       Do you have any existing module in your server as customization or purchase from other company.

    2.       Do you planed to implement category targeting for  native apps as mentioned on last discussion   .

There are a few issues with Similar web API for content matching. It is domain level or app level category. That is not granular enough. It is not generic, too.

To be granular, you need to go down to content level. For example, for ecommerce site, you need to know when a user searches Nikon camera or baby diaper. For another example, for a news app, you need to know when a user reads about Taylor Swift or "The Uber Model, It Turns Out, Doesn't Translate".

To be generic, you need to go down to content level. For example, Nikon camera can be searched in an ecommerce site or in a native app. You only need to match ad with Nikon camera. That means by focusing on content, your technology works for both Web and in-app.

Our technologies focus on content. It takes free texts, product names or barcodes (UPC, EAN and ISBN), returns their IAB category, product category, etc. You can go to (http://compariola.com/AdSmart/TestAd) to test drive.

We do have service available for content matching. Please let me know if you would like to know more.

Thanks,

Gary

Content matching for websites :

In Flipkart site / any e-commerce site if user search on mobiles , we have to deliver the Mobile related / category matched ads when they redirect to another websites .

Content matching for Apps :

Similarly In Flipkart App / any e-commerce App , if user search on mobiles , we have to deliver the Mobile related / category matched ads when they open another Apps .

Queries :

As you mentioned “We do have service available for content matching” in previous mail . So are you having service to provide user searched keywords ?.

If yes , Could you explain how it fetch user search keywords from e-commerce site or app ,  and in which format we receive the matched keywords as response.

Can you share your Skype IM for a quick discussion.

Arun Krishnan

As mentioned before, our technology is realtime. Just like you search in an e-commerce site, at the same time the search string is submitted as part of request to our service for content matching. Please go to my blog http://www.adrelevantis.com/corp/blog.html for more details.

You can save user searches for retargeting. For example, a user searches a product or scans a barcode (UPC, EAN or ISBN) in an app, using our service you find the category and matching ads. The search and its category can be collected as user data, and be used for retargeting purpose.

Our service is by invitation only. If you are interested, I can send you a link in a separate email.

Thanks,

Gary

Here is the code for Content Targeting Plugin http://www.adrelevantis.com/corp/download/ContentTargetPlugin.zip .

It is implemented as a Group in the Delivery Limitation Plugin. It reflects our view that Content Targeting is just like Geo Targeting or other targetings.

You can find more information about the Content Targeting Plugin at http://www.adrelevantis.com/corp/blog/content-delivery-limitation-plugin.html .

Please feel free to explore the code and ask questions. We also appreciate your opinions and suggestions.

In addition to Content Targeting Plugin, you probably are interested in targeting ads based on dynamic content or based on content in mobile apps. They can be done by Content Programming. With Content Programming, you decide what content to pass to the matching function and when to call it.

For example, for an e-commerce site, you can call the matching function when a user clicks a product link by passing the product name. A matched ad is then displayed along side the product details.

Please find the details in my blog "Empower Your Ad Server with Content Programming" (http://www.adrelevantis.com/corp/blog/empower-your-adserver-with-content-programming.html) .
