  1. You may have seen last month’s announcement by Adzerk CEO James Avery: Adzerk will end its Self-Serve Program on August 31, 2014. After that date, ads will stop serving, and users will no longer be able to log in on their accounts. Please refer to the blog post on the Adzerk site for the full details and explanation. James was kind enough to mention a few options for Adzerk users, and Revive Adserver was listed as their only recommendation for people looking for a self-hosted ad server solution. In early 2013, when OpenX OnRamp was shut down, many of you may have migrated to Adzerk, so it must be somewhat disturbing to have to go through a similar process once again. Fortunately, you will find yourself on familiar ground when you switch to us. As the official successor of OpenX Source, the free open source software Revive Adserver will make you feel right at home. Some people made the move already, and according to this tweet, it turned out to be a wise decision: For those of you that have made the switch, and for those that are still thinking about: Welcome to our community! 3. Please be aware that the order of two steps is incorrect. You'll have to configure the Delivery Cache Store plugin first. Only after you've done that, you can use modify the setting for the Banner Delivery Cache Settings.
  4. The Revive Adserver Project Team announces the release of a new version of the popular free open source ad server system Revive Adserver. Version 3.0.5 is primarily a security and bug fix release, and contains one new feature. It is available on the Downloads page of this website. Security fix in Revive Adserver version 3.0.5 This version 3.0.5 of Revive Adserver addresses a moderate security issue, which has been identified by the project team recently on the basis of reports about OpenX Source v2.8. We recommend users to upgrade to the most recent version 3.0.5 of Revive Adserver. This also includes any user running any version of OpenX Source or older versions of the application, which may also be vulnerable. Please review our Security Advisory for the details. New in Revive Adserver v3.0.5 This new version 3.0.5 contains one new feature: An error message is now displayed when trying to install or upgrade Revive Adserver with unsupported PHP 5.4/5.5 versions (< 5.4.20 or < 5.5.2). Revive Adserver v3.0.5 bug fixes This new version 3.0.5 also fixes the following bugs: Fixed bad translation in the Russian language translation. Fixed history statistics screens to prevent displaying future dates when showing “All statistics”. Fixed broken “DeliveryDataPrepare:dataPageInfo” and “DeliveryDataPrepare:dataUserAgent” components of the standard delivery logging plugin. Added proper Content-Type header with charset to some scripts in order to override the webserver default. Changed a few occurrences of the non-existing “Content-Size” header to “Content-Length”. Switched a few deprecated “ereg” calls to “preg” in PEAR libraries. Download – install – upgrade Version 3.0.5 is available on the Downloads page of this website. We also have detailed instructions for installation of the software or for upgrading from an older version. Please be sure to check the technical requirements first. 5. Revive Adserver Community Forums It was hard not to notice it: ever since the old forums on openx.org were closed at the end of March 2014, our Revive Adserver Community Forums were flooded with spam messages. On some days, we would see dozens of fake and pointless posts in the forums. Of course, we immediately started cleaning up the forums manually, but it soon became clear there was no end to the nuisance. In April, we implemented multiple technical measures in the forum’s software to detect potential spammers and block them from registering, and to delete spam that still made it through. It seems that this has helped, the spam flood has been stopped almost entirely and has now returned to a manageable level. We want to thank those members who took the trouble to report spam posts to the moderators, and we want to thank all members for their patience while we were fighting this matter. 6. You do not need to buy anything to achieve this. This is an standard feature that is already built into the core product.
  7. Documentation can now be found at http://documentation.revive-adserver.com/display/DOCS/Revive+Adserver+Documentation
  8. Last month, we introduced the new Documentation site for Revive Adserver, with an initial focus on end user documentation. Today, we’re pleased to announce that work has started on adding sections that are intended for system administrators, and other technical roles. The first article explains the purpose of the hourly maintenance process, including a detailed description on how to setup an automatic maintenance trigger by means of a cron task. Bonus tip: Custom URL for ‘Support’ link in header Revive Adserver v3.0.3 introduced a new feature, enabling system administrators to define a URL to be used when users click the Support link in the user interface. If the field in the User Interface Settings page remains empty, the Support item links to http://www.revive-adserver.com/support/ on our website. If you prefer to send your users to your own support pages, or a help desk tool, you can enter the appropriate URL in the User Interface Settings screen. Once you save these settings, the Support link will automatically be altered. View the full article
  9. We would like to inform our users that we have repackaged the download files for Revive Adserver v3.0.4, which we released yesterday. If you downloaded the official download for version 3.0.4 before 10 AM UTC on April 10, 2014, then please download again to obtain the newly packaged file. Here is a more detailed explanation of the issue that prompted us to repackage the files: From reports on the Community Forums, we learned about a problem experienced by users attempting to perform a new installation of Revive Adserver v3.0.4. It turns out there has been a glitch when packaging the release files, and a last minute fix in the ‘delivery cache plugin’ was not applied to the files that went into the release package of version 3.0.4. The plugin manifest file wasn’t updated and upon installation, the Revive Adserver installation wizard complained about missing files in the package. Most likely, upgrades from OpenX Source (v2.8.11 and earlier) were also affected, due to the plugin version change. Upgrades from Revive Adserver v3.0.x were likely not affected, as the plugin’s migration would be skipped due to the version being the same. The repackaged files of Revive Adserver v3.0.4 are functionally identical to the affected files offered for download yesterday. We want to thank the community for reporting the issue and we want to thank everyone for their patience while we were fixing it. View the full article
  10. The Revive Adserver Project Team announces the release of a new version of the popular free open source ad server system Revive Adserver. Version 3.0.4 is a bug fix release, and is available on the Downloads page of this website. Revive Adserver v3.0.4 fixes 4 bugs: Fixed problem with automatic maintenance not working in v3.0.3 (see below) Fixed mangled characters in the Hebrew translation Fixed query errors when a non-existing zone was requested Removed references to previous product name from plugin translation files Automatic maintenance issue in Revive Adserver v3.0.3 A small number of our users experienced an issue with version 3.0.3 (released on March 13, 2014), more specifically with the hourly maintenance process. We would like to explain how this issue affected them. The Revive Adserver software has a feature called “maintenance”. It is supposed to run every hour, and it will perform several tasks. It will summarize the statistics that have been collected in the previous hour, it will update the probability of the banners in all zones, and (at midnight), it will check if there is a new version available. The majority of users have setup a cron job (scheduled task) to trigger the maintenance process every hour. This is called ‘Scheduled maintenance’. Typically, this runs at the top of the hour, sometimes at one minute past the top of the hour. These users have had no issue since they upgraded to version 3.0.3. The Revive Adserver software is able detects that a Scheduled maintenance process has not run. If that is the case, then 5 minutes past the top of the hour, it will execute the maintenance process after all. This is called Automatic maintenance. However, a bug in version 3.0.3 affected the Automatic maintenance, and the effect was that the maintenance process doesn’t run. Typically, users who rely on Automatic maintenance, will have noticed that their statistics are no longer updating. The numbers are most likely still being collected in the background, and it is expected that the statistics will pick up once an upgrade to version 3.0.4 has been completed. View the full article
  11. The Revive Adserver project team is proud to reveal the new Revive Adserver documentation pages. With the release of version 3.0.3 of the Revive Adserver software last week, the Help button in the user interface has been changed. It now links to the documentation directly, and even attempts to send users to the relevant page for the particular screen they are working on. The documentation is far from complete, and it will probably take some time before every single bit of functionality gets documented. We also know that many people are looking for administrator documentation and even developer documentation. As a small team, we have to make decisions on how we use our time, and we determined that user documentation for Revive Adserver was the most important section to work on first. More documentation pages will be added in the near future, and you’ll read about this here on our blog. We hope that this new documentation will help new (and experienced) users to make the most of the Revive Adserver software. View the full article
  12. After our blog on January 16, reporting that there were 1,222 active installations of Revive Adserver, we have a new number to report. We’re very proud that we now have more than 2,500 active instances of Revive Adserver. Active Instances of the Revive Adserver software on March 17, 2014 In the chart on the right, each dot represents the number of active instances at one month intervals after the first release on September 13, 2013. There are two dots in the top right corner. The lower one is the number of active installs on March 13, so exactly 6 months since we started this project. On this date, which also marked the release of the new Revive Adserver v3.0.3, the counter was at 2,498, just 2 short of a major milestone. Today, we can celebrate crossing that mark. In fact, on March 17, 2014, the counter was at 2,547, and the number continues to grow every day. This is more than double the number we had 3 months ago! We want to thank each and every member of the Revive Adserver community for their trust in the project and for using our software on a daily basis! View the full article
  13. Revive Adserver v3.0.3 Released The Revive Adserver Project Team is proud to announce the release of a new version of the popular free open source ad server system Revive Adserver. Version 3.0.3 is available on the Downloads page of this website. What is new? Revive Adserver v3.0.3 introduces 6 new features: Preview of Flash banners now also shows the backup image, if set. API now supports setting chainedZoneId. Added support for WebM videos in the IAB Video plugin. Increased the maximum delay in the midnight maintenance script (from 10 seconds to 30 seconds) before calling the sync server for update information to improve load distribution on the server. Updated the Revive Adserver application header to replace the “Report bug” link with a more useful “Support” link (which includes details on how to report a bug, in addition to how to get support). Added support for hosting providers of Revive Adserver to configure a custom URL for the “Support” link in the application header. What has been improved? Revive Adserver v3.03 fixes 20 bugs: Fixed the detected product name on upgrade to correctly distinguish between older OpenX Source installations vs. newer Revive Adserver installations. Fixed the date format for the Spanish language pack. Fixed some instances of the old application name in robots.txt files. Fixed API incompatibilities with PHP 5.4+. Fixed an issue with the generation of a platform hash value which is used when connecting to the sync server to check for updates to Revive Adserver. Fixed encoding issues and bad translations in the Chinese language translations. Fixed encoding issues with some of the Czech language translations. Fixed encoding issues with some of the Russian language translations. Added (some) new Chinese translations for plugins. Fixed SWF plugin version requirements for v18-22. Fixed a bug that prevented successfully submitting the forms after a server side validation error. Fixed a library bug that was causing invalid errors to be displayed in the statistics screens under certain conditions. Added missing configuration options relating to the filenames for Single Page Call functionality to the admin user Configuration > Global Settings > Banner Delivery Settings tab. Fixed incorrect detection of command-line based called to Revive Adserver, so that an error message is shown when the maintenance script is called without the required host parameter, instead of displaying a PHP error. Fixed branding on the website Single Page Call invocation code tag page. Fixed the display of the license on the install/upgrade welcome screen when using a non-root based installation process. Fixed bug causing the last advertiser being sometimes hidden in the advertiser index screen. Fixed issue that allowed installing an already installed plugin, causing the plugin tables to be dropped without notice. Fixed logging of direct selection impressions/requests not properly working on PostgreSQL under some circumstances. Fixed API XML-RPC output not properly dealing with NULL values. Non-backward compatible changes Email based campaign activation/deactivation reports are now disabled by default when creating new advertisers. This does not affect any existing advertiser account settings for this feature; but please be aware that the default for all new advertiser accounts has been changed. Removed unused Zend XML-RPC library. Make sure your 3rd party plugins bundle their own if they need it. The OA_Sync class has been moved to the RV_Sync class; please make sure your 3rd party plugins are updated accordingly. Download – install – upgrade Version 3.0.3 is available on the Downloads page of this website. We also have detailed instructions for installation of the software or for upgrading from an older version. Please be sure to check the technical requirements first. 20. In the year 2013 that just ended, the Revive Adserver project was first revealed. While we are preparing for the new year, we thought it would be fun to wrap up the old year in this blog post. September 2013: Project announcement, new name, and release of version 3.0.0 On Friday, September 13, 2013, our project and the new name for the ad server software were officially announced to the world: Revive Adserver. We take pride in being selected as the official successor of the world’s most popular free open source ad server software, OpenX Source. Of course, our team had been preparing for this for some time. It gave us the opportunity to release a brand new version of the software on the same date, September 13. Version 3.0.0 focused on removing some deprecated features such as the OpenX Market integration. We also included a fix for a security issue that was discovered just a few days before the release. November 2013: Upgrade notifications to existing OpenX Source installations On November 18, 2013, we started sending out notifications about the Revive Adserver v3.0.0 release to all existing OpenX Source installations. This resulted in an immediate upswing in the number of live instances of the Revive Adserver software (see below for some insights). December 2013: Community Forums and 2 releases On December 11, 2013, we officially opened the new Revive Adserver Community Forums, to enable all members of the community to communicate with each other, to post questions and answers, and to share ideas. The forums are a clear success, in just 7 weeks we’ve seen 77 members signing up, 302 messages were posted and more than a 1,000 people visited the forums a total of almost 1,900 times. This resulted in over 13,000 page views, and an average time on site of more than 7 minutes. Two days later, on December 13, 2013, Revive Adserver version 3.0.1 was released. We resolved a large number of bugs and issues, and we added support for Flash banners created with Flash version 11 and above. Just one week later, on December 20, 2013, we released Revive Adserver version 3.0.2. This was an urgent security release fixing a single vulnerability that was discovered and reported to us by community member Florian Sander. We also posted a detailed Security Advisory and notified the most important news sources. Wide spread acceptance of Revive Adserver We are delighted to see that the new Revive Adserver software has been accepted and installed by hundreds of users. We would like to share a few numbers with the community: On October 1, which was 2 weeks after we first released Revive Adserver 3.0.0, there were 15 live instances around the globe. On November 1, we saw 35 live instances, so more than double from a month before. After the new version notification was sent out on November 18, many people started upgrading or creating new installations, and on December 1, we reported 327 live instances, an increase of 930% in just 30 days. The December 13 release of version 3.0.1 and the subsequent December 20 release of security fix version 3.0.2 appears to have convinced even more people that Revive Adserver is here to stay, and on New Year’s eve, we measured 825 live instances of the application. This was an increase of more than 250% in the month of December. We hope and expect that the number of live instances will continue to grow in the coming months, as more and more people have time and opportunity to perform an upgrade, or perhaps even to start using Revive Adserver for the first time. An exciting year ahead We look forward to the new year 2014, and to working with the community of existing and new users. The Revive Adserver project has had a flying start, and we intend to maintain the momentum. Please continue using the forums to communicate with us and other community members. We are planning new releases in the coming year, and we welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions for them. A very happy new year 2014 to all of you, and best wishes from the Revive Adserver Project Team, Andrew, Matteo, and Erik View the full article
